PRE-COLUMBIAN ICONOGRAPHY
Clay on Canvas 2010
Precolumbian Iconography is based on a study I did on precolumbian costarican art
at the National Museum of Costa Rica.
at the National Museum of Costa Rica.
The intriguing shapes I discovered on the precolumbian pottery dating from the 1500s could have been painted today, the forms are so simple but also incredibly rich.
The animal symbolism that decorates precolumbian costa-rican pottery is not just painted for decoration, but rather serves as a way of express the beliefs of their creators with the goal to transmit values.
All precolumbian art has a deep spiritual significance by associating animals with religious symbolism.
This collection is entirely and solely painted with clay stones found in the rivers and mountains of Costa Rica. Some of the symbols depicted here are not from Costa Rica.
